how do you make a roman blind?

Category : roman blinds

i have very limited knowledge of the little sewing machine I have just bought, and having just finished decorating our kitchen I would like to have a go at making roman blinds in a lovely rich ruby or cherry colour for a quite large window and another smaller one. Will I end up spending more than saving as I throw out yard of ruined fabric or is it quite simple to make these blinds? Believe me, it will have to be childsplay!

Roman blinds are fairly basic to make to an experienced machinist. The fabric tends to be heavier than curtain material, so that it hangs well in the window alcove.
The length of the blind is the depth of the window to the sill. The width is the width of the recess. The idea, as you know is to create a folding of the fabric as you pull the lower margin up with a cord through a series of small metal rings.
The top of the blind needs to be firmly fixed to a wooden batten at the window top recess.

I have two Internet sites for you:

Ok I have a very easy almost no sew option for you. First, pick out some nice fabric. You are going to want to measure from the inside top of your window to the inside bottom. For fullness you can add extra inches or just leave it as is. Then, grab some coordinating fabric ribbon. Your going to need four equal lengths of say 1yrd each (so that’s four yards total). Also, some iron on hem from your fabric notions section of your craft store.

Ok, now you are going to fold over your ends and make a hem. On top hem make enough room to thread a rod through.
Attach the no sew hem and iron on. (read direction to pack). Then, sew two ribbons 12inches in on top of shade just under hem. One ribbon in front one in back. Then, sew other two ribbons 12 inches from the end on top of shade just under hem. One ribbon in front and one in back. Now thread your rod through and hang. Then just tie the ribbons in a bow to hold up shade. (2 bows one on right one on left.)

:) Very little sewing very very very easy!
