Why is it that you have to open your window blinds on a plane during takeoff and landing?

Category : window blinds

I always like to sleep on planes, from the moment I board and therefore like to have my window blinds shut during the whole flight. I’ve recently noticed that flight attendants ask everyone to open their window blinds during takeoff and landing and wonder why…

Its incase something happens outside the aircraft, for example the engine caught fire, would that be a bitch if everyone had their window blinds shut and couldn’t see it!

Also, its to regulate the light in the cabin, same reason the lights are dimmed at night time for landing, so that if you were to have an emergency and get out the aircraft quickly, you wouldn’t be dazzled.

In case there is a problem of some kind the flight crew many need to look out the window. It’s FAA regulations.

Not on any airline that I’ve been on. Here’s the list:

Delta, Northwest, Continental, United, US Airways, America West (out of business now), American Airlines, Sun Country, Sun Airlines (Chile), some other one whose name I forgot in Belize, British Airways, Air Panama, Aeroperlas, Aerolineas Argentinas, Winair, LAN, Swiss, Air France, and Alitalia.

I may have forgotten some other one or two, but I’ve never had that asked of me, or anyone else that I’ve heard. They haven’t said it on the announcement either, so I dunno.
